About York St John University

york

When you study at York St John University it’s personal. Our close-knit campus means you will be known as an individual by your tutors, taught in small class sizes and have the space to be yourself. We value a learning environment that is generous, curious and rigorous.

York St John University is the oldest higher education institution in York and has been at the forefront of teaching and education for over 175 years. It has seen many changes, from its early days as a teacher training college to welcoming over 6,100 students from across the world today.

Our city-centre campus, located in the heart of historic York, comprises a blend of old and new buildings and the feeling of community is one of the things our students love the most about studying with us.

I have learned so much and been continuously challenged and inspired by the brilliant, warm and highly-dedicated academic staff. The community feeling of the University is obvious and really helps you feel at home and get involved.

Academic experience

Our academics are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise and applying it in the real world, encouraging you to ask questions, challenging your thinking and developing the skills you need. Their experience of working with partners in all sectors - from schools and hospitals, to large and small businesses, to theatres and charities - means that they can help you to bring your research interests to life and apply your learning to areas where it matters the most.

At York St John University we use research to make a positive difference in the world. You will work alongside Academic experts who understand how to align your research interests with real-world impact. 30% of our research was found to be world-leading or internationally excellent in the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014).

I have thoroughly enjoyed the ability to get involved with student led conferences and symposiums and get the chance to offer my own ideas and begin developing my own presentation style in a supportive environment. I don’t know that other universities offer the same opportunities to their students.

Postgraduate student life

We understand that choosing to study at Postgraduate level can be a big commitment when you have other responsibilities to balance in life as well. At York St John University we offer increasingly flexible ways to learn and study within a community that is always welcoming and ready to support you.

All of the Students’ Union societies and sports clubs are open to Postgraduate students, so you can get involved with the wider student community by joining a team or taking up a new hobby. There are also numerous campus-wide annual events which Postgraduate students engage in, such as the Aesthetica Short Film Festival, in addition to Global Campus initiatives which encourage international and home students to engage in cross-cultural activities.

I found that joining the Musical Production Society really helped me to relax as well as having a great time and meeting people who have interests in common. I would recommend trying to join a society that fits around your commitments as it helps with embracing the university experience.

York

Recently named by The Sunday Times, York is a city buzzing with culture and nightlife, with festivals throughout the year, a great arts scene, and plenty of museums and galleries. With a huge variety of pubs, clubs, bars and independent restaurants you are sure to have a great time living and studying in York.

Many of our students choose to commute to York from nearby towns and cities while they study with us. This is an easy city to commute to, with an extensive bus and rail network, and commuting students are still very much
connected to campus life.

Making you stand out

We are proud of our relationships with local and national businesses and organisations. These partners regularly work with us to refresh our curricula so that they are up-to-date, and often help us with the delivery and assessment of our modules. We are renowned for our sense of community and spirit of collaboration, both on campus and across the city.

Our s in real-world businesses offer advice, networking opportunities and experience to help get your own businesses started. We offer business workshops, advice on funding and can provide information about affordable workspaces and business networks located within the city.

York St John University’s relationships with other local organisations has been vital to my experience. My PhD was co-hosted by York Theatre Royal, giving me the opportunity to develop as a performer and practitioner. It also ensured that my evolving theoretical understanding was grounded in the day-to-day realities of practice with young people.

If you need to write a paper or read up on something, the library is one of the best I have seen. There is an extensive amount of resources and library staff are very helpful. If you are working up on the second floor or can’t find a certain book, you can email the library and a member of staff will find it and bring it to you. Now if that isn’t great service, I don’t know what is!
