Future career prospects
The Good Universities Guide (GUG) has awarded UNE five stars for “Overall Student Experience” for the 13th year in a row. In related rankings, GUG ranked UNE as the State’s top university for Student Support and Teaching Quality. UNE’s graduates also have the state’s highest starting salary upon entering the workforce, and the University has the highest proportion of “first in family” graduates.
“It is due to the hard work and capability of our staff that UNE’s students feel well supported, and a testament to this support that UNE is a top-rating university for graduate employment and graduate starting salary.” Vice-Chancellor, Professor Annabelle Duncan.
English language centre
The UNE English Language Centre provides intensive courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and General English (GE). Placement in formal degree programs is guaranteed for suitably qualified applicants who complete their EAP English course satisfactorily.
Facilities and support arrangements
The university provides airport reception and an orientation programme. Support services include English language and study skills programs, health cover assistance, family support and advice, visa renewals and work permits, welfare and advisory services, student clubs and societies, accommodation assistance and places of religious worship (including a mosque where students can purchase Halal food). There is also a number of libraries on the campus. The sporting facilities include 12 hectares of playing fields, tennis and squash courts, a heated swimming pool, a fully equipped gymnasium and other indoor recreation facilities.
Fees, funding and costs
Migration regulations in Australia require international students to show evidence that they can afford the cost of living and studying in Australia. This helps to ensure students are better able to make the most of their studies and have a safe and enjoyable experience in Australia.
While international students may be able to supplement their income with money earned through part-time work in Australia, the ‘living costs’ requirement helps to support the success of students in their studies by ensuring that they don’t have to rely on such work to meet all their expenses.
Prospective student visa applicants and their family members must have access to the following funds to meet living costs requirements:
- A$20,290 a year for the main student
- A$7,100 a year for the student’s partner
- A$3,040 a year for each child
Students must demonstrate that the funds they are relying upon to meet the costs of studying in Australia will be genuinely available to them during their stay in Australia.
The figures above are indicative only and costs can vary significantly depending on your situation. You should be prepared in case your living costs are greater than the indicated figures.

Most students studying at UNE choose to live in share houses or apartments. Shared housing is a great way to meet new friends and be a part of a learning and social environment off campus. Known as the cultural and educational centre of the north, Armidale is proud of The New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), which houses two major art collections of over 1,200 works, including paintings by famous Australian artists Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton. Theatre also plays an active part in Armidale life and local theatre companies also offer plays on a regular basis. The Armidale orchestra, jazz band, Armidale city band and the youth orchestra hold regular concerts and a variety of local and imported rock and dance bands regularly perform at venues across the city. Armidale has many clubs and hotels where people of all ages and nationalities can socialise, listen to music, dance the night away or just relax – which is especially good outdoors on a warm summer night!
Climatically, Armidale is one of the relatively few areas in Australia that enjoys four distinct seasons, with spectacular autumns, frosty winters, glorious summers and rejuvenating springtimes.
