About School of Education

Be the one to inspire

The School of Education at Liverpool John Moores University will help you gain the knowledge, understanding and skills to inspire learning and enrich communities.

The School is home to teacher education, education, and early childhood studies.

Why choose postgraduate study at LJMU?

Whether you want to fulfil your potential and qualify as a teacher, or expand your professional skill set and enhance your pedagogical knowledge, our team of experienced and specialist tutors will do everything we can to help you succeed.

Our postgraduate Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses consistently receive excellent feedback from students – 92% rated our teacher training as good or very good (OFSTED Mirror Survey of Postgraduate ITE 2017-18).

Ofsted’s latest report (published January 2019) graded our primary partnership provision as outstanding and our secondary as good – making LJMU the highest graded ITT provider in Merseyside.

Our taught education masters and research degrees offer you the chance to focus your passion, enhance your pedagogical knowledge and apply your learning directly to your professional practice.

The support I have received from LJMU has been invaluable. From an academic point of view I have had the same dissertation tutor right through from my undergraduate degree and that one constant has been priceless. All of the staff at IM Marsh have an open door policy so support with essays has been great too. The wellbeing team has provided the specialist equipment I have needed as I have moved from undergraduate to masters-level study and then on to PhD.

Facilities and support arrangements

Currently based at our IM Marsh Campus in Aigburth, a leafy suburb of Liverpool, the School of Education benefits from facilities including an on-site library with PCs and group study areas, student social space, strength and conditioning suite, and sports fields. Our Student Advice and Wellbeing and Careers teams also run regular drop in sessions throughout the week.

As part of LJMU’s extensive capital reinvestment programme, there are plans for the School of Education to move to a new site in Liverpool city centre in the next academic year.

Leading the way in educational research

Located within the School of Education, the Centre for Educational Research (CERES) acts as a developmental focus for educational research within the Faulty, but also has strong links with the University’s Teaching and Learning Academy and with educational researchers across the University.

In the Research Excellence Framework 2014, 61% of CERES research was rated as 'internationally excellent' or 'world leading'.

Our expertise is clustered around four themes:

  • Technologies of learning, teaching and training
  • Relational learning
  • Professional research, practice and learning
  • Sustainability, social justice and inclusion

In addition we have links to other areas of the University involved in educational research:

  • Research Centre for Brain and Behaviour
  • Teaching and Learning Academy
  • Outdoor Education
  • Leadership, Education and Development
