Job description

The General counselor is your all rounder at summer camp.

As a Summer Camp Counselor, your role is to join in, have fun and to guide your campers throughout their schedule. Far from the lay down on the couch and tell me about your problems type counselor (which might spring to mind) - at camp, the term counselor simply means you’re the ones in with the kids.

No need for qualifications.

A great General Counselor will be a strong all-rounder, happy to join in and give everything a go.They live life with the children at summer camp, usually sharing a cabin. They’ll get up, get the kids up and moving. Make sure they’ve brushed their teeth and hair, then accompany them to all the activities throughout the day.

General Ccounselors are known to be outgoing and active people. They are up for all activities and challenges, it’s up to you to keep the campers motivated and supervised.

As a camp counselor;

  • You’ll get to have a go at everything
  • You’ll know the campers the best
  • You’ll be part of an international team

Camp counselor jobs are your chance to have a different kind of summer, spending nine weeks working with children.

It's a great experience for anyone who wants to go into teaching or coaching. As one of the most exciting Camp Leaders jobs, this role pushes you to be a better person and you’ll walk away as a problem solver, a communicator and a team player.

Working at a summer camp is the experience of a lifetime. Being a general counselor means you get to enjoy everything camp has to offer, you don't need to be qualified and you also get up to travel Canada after camp!

Activity specialist

Activity Specialists are counselors who have a particularly strong skill set. They’ll run the activity or will help lead in their specialty sport. From waking up in the morning, they will be stationed in their activity location and will help teach the campers, run games and coach matches. When not teaching, they will fulfill the role of a general counselor and look after a particular age group.

Activity specialists are the leaders in their activity. They will be skilled in their subject area and confident to lead a class. Again known to be very enthusiastic and more than willing to get involved.

As a summer camp activity specialist, you’ll be the go-to person for a specific skill area. Activities are what makes camp such an energetic and unique place. Most days you’ll have around five sessions where you’ll coach, and for that hour it’s where the campers can have fun, improve their skills and try new things.

There are so many sports and activities at camp, something for everyone, so whether you're interested in archery, lifeguarding or the great outdoors - you'll be able to do something which inspires you this summer.

As an activity specialist at summer camp;

  • You get to teach what you love
  • You’ll know everyone at camp
  • You get to make a camper’s summer

You get to have the experience of a lifetime teaching something you love for 9 weeks you also get to travel Canada and explore one of the most mable countries in the world.

Support staff

Support Staff are found behind the scenes. They keep camp fed, watered and maintained. A support staff member will have a specialty also - but this will be either kitchen, maintenance, gardening or office work.

A support staff team member is someone who works at camp but their role isn’t directly involved with the campers.

Camp couldn’t function without these guys and as part of the support staff, it’ll be up to you to keep everything running super smooth on a daily basis. Making sure everyone has the equipment, facilities and food they need to keep camp going full swing.

There are four main support staff categories which can be found at camp;

  • Office
  • Maintenance
  • Housekeeping
  • Kitchen

Support staff are hard workers, they get up early and will work through the day. Keen to join in with activities and enjoy camp life from a different viewpoint. Support staff are very inclusive, with many cultures and people from all around the world.

The main difference between counselors and specialists vs support staff is the interaction with the campers. As a support staff, you wouldn’t have much daily interaction with the campers - the roles are more structured, with set hours and a set skill set. You’ll have the perks of summer camp life - access to activities, evening activities after camp travel. Just not the everyday camper routine.
