Although her performing arts degree might differ from her current job Daniella says that the communication skills that it taught her are vital in her role
How did you get the job?
I applied for a casual part-time role at , a company which saves people money on their airport parking, while I was at university. It was attractive because it had flexible hours so I could work and earn money easily around my studies.
Once I graduated I began full-time hours as I had found a role within the company that I enjoyed and since then have worked in various departments. They've been really good about developing my career and now I've found an area that I really enjoy.
What's a typical working day like?
My main responsibilities include maintaining our agency files, including adding new starters to our systems and removing employees that have left. I issue uniform and ID badges to employees and I do reports for management as requested. Occasionally I will be asked to complete other tasks and projects such as taking notes in meetings, helping out in our customer relations team or testing out new systems.
How has your role developed?
I started out at Purple Parking in our kiosk greeting and checking in our customers. Since then I have worked in various roles in the company including call centre agent, staffing co-ordinator, customer relations executive and most recently personnel assistant. There always seems to be new things to learn about the company and to contribute towards.
What do you enjoy about the job?
I relish how full-on my role is as I prefer to be busy, I can't stand it when you're watching the clock waiting for something to happen. The communication skills that I learned from my degree get used a lot in my role here and that's a very positive thing.
What are the challenges?
There are a lot of external factors, such as weather, traffic, accidents and strikes, which can affect our business and cause various challenges for us. We have to be really attuned to those changes and to make the best of them.
What advive would you give to an aspiring HR assistant?
You need to be prepared for different challenges every day and be highly organised. You need to be a people person, not take things personally and be able to think on your feet. It also helps if you have a sensible business attitude as you deal with a number of things that are private.
